Homme

Project Overview

Unintentional accidents are the leading cause of disability, permanent injury, and death among children in the world. Unsafe environmental conditions are a major contributor to many childhood incidents.

Since children under the age of 5 years old spend most of their time at home, they are more likely to experience these incidents at home. Homme helps parents to be aware of potential risks related to children's health at home and how they can deal with them.

Goal

My primary goal was to create a platform that educates parents about home risks for their toddlers and how to handle them.

Project Approach

In this project, I examined users based on the User-Centered Design (UCD) methodology.
This is a framework that enables the designer to engage with and listen to users to determine what they want.

Research

  • Secondary research about injury prevention

  • Semi-structured interviews and surveys

  • Competitive analysis

Each year in the United States, more than 2200 children die from an injury they received at home.

Field Research

Injury prevention strategies cover a variety of approaches, many of which are classified as falling under the

"3 E’s" of injury prevention:

  • Environment: approaches to deal with making the environment or product safer.

  • Educationapproaches to deal with providing information to individuals.

  • Enforcement: approaches rely on requiring change through laws.

Interview and Survey

I arranged 15 interviews and 100 surveys with end-users, and families with children between 0-5, to understand their current prevention interventions, expectations, and frustrations.

Learn

  • The majority of families had little information about home safety.

  • First-time parents feel the necessity of a program that can provide them with essential home safety tips.

  • Parents often become aware of home safety measures only after their children have had an accident.

As an 8-month pregnant first-time mother, I feel unprepared for motherhood, lacking sufficient information on kids' safety preparation, and with my home still to be prepared for the baby.

Competitive Analysis

I evaluated current apps in the market. There are some apps in the market that are used by parents.

  • Born Ready

  • IKEA Safer Home

Insight

What did I learn?

Based on my findings, parents need education about how to make their home a safer place for their children. I formed the following main design principles specifically for my design:

  • Simple: Simplify the experience of using the application.

  • Personalized: Childproofing is not a one-size-fits-all experience. Provide information based on the user's situation.

  • Reliable: Present the information in a transparent manner.

Persona

To represent the goals and needs of the users I designed three personas based on my research phase. In the following, I'm going to show one of them.

Take away

As I transition from focusing on physical to digital products for the first time, my background in industrial design has proven invaluable throughout the design process. Research, sketching, prototyping, and development are integral steps in both fields. Although the design processes share similarities, as a UX designer, I now have the opportunity to continually research and enhance the design based on user feedback once a product is released.
